A downloadable game for Android

Calm before the storm

A chaotic mayhem shooter for Android (prototype)

This game is a "Chaotic Mayhem Shooter"  (a random genre I just invented :D ). A fast-paced, top-down 2D action game that displays short, frenetic levels where survival hinges on quick reflexes, creative improvisation, and chaotic interactions. Players face off against an array of bizarre, ridiculous zombies in environments designed to amplify the mayhem: Bullets do more than just destroy —they increase with each kill, bouncing off walls and obstacles, leading to unpredictable, often humorous outcomes.

The gameplay is characterized by its silly, colorful aesthetic and absurd scenarios, ensuring each level is a fast, action-packed burst of fun. The focus is on immediate, high-energy action with no downtime.

Sorry - lots of bugs. Be kind

  • In the spirit of a true game jam, I broke lots of mechanics in the last 2 hrs...allin mechanc stopped working, modifiers broken, resource gained suddenly skyrocket.
  • Try to see the GOOD in the game and kindly provide feedback on the movement, the look anad feel

How to install game for Android

  • Requires Android
  • In general, you need to download the “.apk” file  for this project, and run it using your android device. For most devices however, it won’t allow you to install apps from outside the default app store, unless you set the appropriate settings. This is usually done if you go to “Settings” -> “Security” -> “Unknown Sources”. If you tick that, it should allow you to install “.apk” files from the web.

How to play

  • Every 12 kills, your player shoots one additional bullet, making it increasingly difficult to not get killed in the crosshairs
  • Bullets bounce off walls and objects, giving an increasing feeling of chaos and mayhem
  • The more enemies you eliminate, the more resources can be secured; after each round you can do an "All in" round with even tougher spawning mechanics BUT you also get double the resources. All or nothing!
  • You can unlock and activate three unique modifiers which drastically change the gameplay (more exploding zombies, more slippery zombies, more bouncing-off effect of bullets)

HUD explained

  • Top bar indicates timeleft
  • Bottom bar indicates progress towards the additional projectile shot per shot (each 12 kills the additional projectile is added)

The City's growth

  • Every 1.000 resources, your city's population doubles
  • You can unlock three "modifiers" after 1.000 resources each, which you can activate or ignore (I might have accidentally broken the modifier system in the last 3hrs before the end of the jam - not sure)
  • The more the city grows, the quicker the enemies spawn, leading to the city's ultimate stagnation or death
  • Question is, what is the maximum city growth you can achieve?

Closing remarks

  • I initially wanted to develop a mobile game but changed mid-way to use the jam to get some feedback on the core gameplay and mechanics (plus, I cannot NOT partipate in Brackey's jam :) )
  • I know the game is no way from polished, one single level, not really balanced spawn mechanics, but I assure you I have overcome massive coding challenges (e.g., I never truly forced myself to use observer patterns and the code is now littered with clean, nice subscribers left and right so that is one thing going for me)
  • I've created a total of 48 scripts for this :D
  • Note to self: Do never ever use a singleton UIController when changing scenes and trying to assign deactivated UI element - just don't. Seriously - hours of my life wasted
