Devlog "First Game Jam ever"
Stay Safe Game Jam: Corona Blob » Devlog
ALMOST DONE! Just 8hrs left for this game jam and I am really on time here! It has been an amazing weekend and I feel proud to be almost done! I was so hyped and nervous during the announcement of the theme. A nice twitch stream kicked off the game jam (amazing remix of the track "Neutron Poly" by the way. The first evening was all about basic brain storming (which is hard if you just recently started game dev and don't know that much yet) and procastinating the scripting itself, in favor of cute 3d models :D
Day 1: EVENING SESSION
- Brainstorming
- 3D Model generation
- Island
- Blobs
- Basic movement animation
- Mesh AI implemented
Day 2: MORNING SESSION
- Coding and coffee for 4hrs straight: Created the whole collisions sytem and the dreaded if-statements that I would need to change colors and change the tag on collision
- Surprisingly easy fix for changing colors/or material rather
- Surprisingly easy fix for drag n drop script, but can’t pursue original idea of dragging sick blob onto separate island; for some reason I can't drop the blob onto the island
- Tried unsuccessfully to add counter of healthy blobs and add it to canvas - god this gave me nightmares during my nap at daytime. I tried a scoring system that each collision triggers a score; but then I wanted to access the variable from the collision script which just was too much for my brain; I parked the idea for a few hours; then made a quick and dirty fix of having an update score in the same collision script. Ugly, but it works and nobody will ever notice
- Added dummy sound if infected, so I can later add array of soundclips
- Big issues with instantiated prefabs that are not changing colors despite successful collision; forum entry but did not help (3hr lost)
- I had to scratch the idea of a train arriving and spawning healthy blobs ☹
- Added GameOver canvas, menu scene
- Checked out 3 games that were already uploaded from other users
DAY 3:
- Building tutorial scene, about the game section
- Looking for good fonts to use
- Added second level
- Removing debug.log texts
- "Recording" of 6 coughing sounds (all genuine coughs by myself :D)
- Fixing "loss canvas" to make it more appealing
- Finding out how to host a web-based version and setting up this itch.io page
- Procrastinating by finalizing devlog
- 8hrs 51 min left
Take care, best regards
